Liberia (LIR) Airport in Costa Rica Announced a $10 Million Expansion Plan

Passenger traffic at the Liberia, Daniel Oduber Airport in Costa Rica (LIR) has significantly increased. That is giving way to an upcoming expansion announced by CORIPORT, the airport´s managing company.

The expansion of the airport, located close to some of the most popular beaches in Costa Rica such as Playas del Coco, Tamarindo and Flamingo, will include the current waiting and baggage claim areas and new spaces for shops and offices. The company reports that the total expansion will increase the terminal area by 20%.

Total expansion costs are estimated at $10.3 million and the timeframe to complete the job will be one year from the second quarter of 2016 to the second quarter of 2017.

Cesar Jaramillo, General Manager of CORIPORT, says: “Liberia has grown as tourist destination, and this reflects in the increase of routes and seats, as well as the arrival of new flights at the terminal.” The amount of passengers increased 12.4% in 2015 compared with 2014.

Also, a new cargo terminal will launch operations in mid-2016 to facilitate business opportunities for importers and exporters, mainly for those in the northwestern region of Costa Rica.

This is great news for the province of Guanacaste because the expansion will bring more jobs and allow a better transit of tourist.
