On Sunday, October 9, 2011 Costa Rica celebrated World Animal Day in San Jose, and honored all forms of animal life. The celebration included a march against animal abuse. The event began in 1931 at a convention of ecologists in Florence, Italy as a way of highlighting the plight of endangered species. October 4 was chosen as World Animal Day because it is the Feast Day of St Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals.
